Each May, fashionistas and celebrities outdo each other on the ‘red/blue’ carpet, trying to capture Anna Wintour’s theme.
India: Indians go crazy spotting the ‘token desis’ who manage an invite.
But not one established TV channel or publication from the Western media mentions them.
They only mention Indian Americans like Mindy Kaling, Priyanka Chopra, and — have to hand it to her — the amazing Mona Patel, who constantly steals the limelight with her innovative outfits.
There are 1.4 billion Indians, plus all the diaspora living outside the subcontinent, yet our celebrities get no mention.
It is insulting and makes me angry.
It seems to me that all the Met Gala organizers really want is the money and endorsements they get from Indian celebrities and their sponsors.
They don’t care about the people.
In my opinion, Natasha Poonawalla stole the thunder with her combined Schiaparelli and Sabyasachi look in 2022. Nothing in Western media. In 2024, Alia Bhatt made hearts flutter with her whimsical garden-themed saree. Not a mention.
And in 2025, the heartthrob of millions, Shahrukh Khan, killed black dandyism in his Sabya-inspired look, only to go unrecognized by TV anchors who treated him like a novice. This is a man who is like God to so many Indians. Not to mention — for me, it’s SRK forever.
Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo.
And let’s talk about Sabyasachi — the common link among all three.
He is a class apart. Starting from humble origins to storming the world with his designs, the man is awesome.
And his shops are a work of art.
He has one of the most iconic stores in New York, the city that hosts the Gala — bringing business to the Big Apple.
He should be feted and asked to dress icons of the West too.
78 years of independence, but we still hanker for approval.
And want to ‘make it’ in the West.
It’s time to start our own Galas.
Let Western celebrities clamor for an invite to our events.
Are we bold enough to boycott events that do not respect our superstar achievers?
